Photographers last night used a major awards ceremony to pay tribute to Tim Hetherington and Chris Hondros who were killed last week in a mortar attack in Libya.
Hundreds attending the Sony World Photography Awards were asked to stand and applaud the two photojournalists as pictures of them were displayed on a giant cinema screen at the Odeon Leicester Square.
At 8.20pm, in an unscheduled part of the awards programme, renowned photojournalist Tom Stoddart took the stage to pay his own personal tribute before asking the audience to stand.
?Last week we lost two giants of contemporary photojournalism,? he told invited guests.
He described Tim and Chris as ?exceptional young men? who were ?smart, passionate, courageous and committed to making a difference?.
Stoddart, who is one of the world’s most respected photojournalists, said the pair ?lived and died for photography?.
