Photographers will be asking themselves how they ever lived without geotagging, claimed a technology analyst at the launch of new Microsoft imaging software.
Geotagging allows photographers to assign GPS data to their images to help them manage their collection and quickly find their images based on the location data.
Speaking at the launch of Microsoft?s new Pro Photo Tools and Expression Media 2 software, a Microsoft spokesman said: ?These products really simplify the process of geotagging and organising digital photos by location, even without a GPS device.?
Microsoft hopes its new software – which is raw file compatible – will appeal to enthusiasts, as well as professionals.
?With Pro Photo Tools you can gather location information from a variety of sources and apply it to the metadata in your images,? explains the firm.
?Geotagging is a hot new area of digital photography and, like other popular digital photo features, I expect photographers will be asking themselves how they ever lived without it,? said Ron Glaz, an analyst at IDC which is a subsiduary of the International Data Group.
?Until now geotagging has been hard to do, requiring special expertise and tools,? added Glaz. ?Microsoft?s initiative of leading the way and making geotagging accessible to pros and enthusiasts alike is a step in the right direction.?

Expression Media 2, digital asset management software, will be go on sale in mid-May.
