A North Yorkshire camera club has won £4,000 from the Arts Council to prevent an ?historic archive of Dales photography? being ?lost forever?.

?In an increasingly digital age many black & white negatives and colour slides are being consigned to the bin,? said Wensleydale Camera Club chairman Leonard Shepperd who told us that the £4,000 payout will be used to help ?obtain and preserve? local pictures from the second half of the 20th century.

On a mission to rescue film-based photos the club wants to track down slides and b&w prints of Wensleydale, Swaledale and Coverdale, taken since 1950, for a show in Leyburn next April, coinciding with the club?s 50th year.

?The preparation work involves scanning original photographs and archival printing and mounting so that a permanent record, supported by an exhibition catalogue, is available for future generations,? added Shepherd.

Wensleydale Camera Club is keen to locate ?unpublished? work. The club can be contacted on 01969 622043 or by emailing shepherdlen@btinternet.com
