Photographers have welcomed the BBC?s decision to amend the rules of a photo competition after AP highlighted concerns that the winner would be required to hand over copyright in images they take.
Applauding the move, the Editorial Photographers United Kingdom & Ireland (EPUK) said: ?A big EPUK hats off to Amateur Photographer magazine who have forced the BBC to revoke a rights grab in its Electric Proms photography competition.?
Formed six years ago EPUK represents the interests of more than 600 photographers.
As we reported last week the BBC is offering the chance to photograph the Electric Proms event which takes place in Camden, London from 25-29 October.
But the BBC yesterday amended the competition rules after they sparked concern that the contest abuses a photographer’s right to retain copyright in images that they take (see yesterday?s AP website story).
Describing the rule change as a ?clear success?, EPUK adds on its website: ?Not only was this an out-and-out rights grab, but the idea that when commissioned, a freelance has to give away copyright is plainly incorrect.?
