The first ?photograph? to sell for more than $1m at auction is an image originally created from parts of Marlboro cigarette adverts torn from magazines.
The image ? by Richard Prince – sold for $1,248,000 (more than £700,000) at a Christie?s auction in New York last night.
Created in 1989 the work – called ?Untitled (Cowboy)? – is better known as a ?re-photograph? whereby the artist photographed parts of adverts from magazines while working in the press clippings department at Time Life magazine.
The artist began his career as a painter.
The auction ? held at the Rockefeller Center ? raised a total of $157,441,600 from sales of post-war and contemporary art.
