The celestial display known as the ‘Northern Lights’ phenomenon is caused by solar eruptions on the surface of the sun. It usually isn’t visible in the UK, however unsually strong solar activity meant that if you were in the right place at the right time, some spectacular displays were on show last night.
Photographers naturally set about capturing this rarest of rare phenomena, and Twitter was quickly awash with images of the Lights in action. Here are a few of our favourites:
