US photographer Jim Goldberg was last night named winner of the £30,000 Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2011.

Organised by The Photographers? Gallery, the annual contest aims to reward a photographer who has made ‘the most significant contribution, in exhibition or publication format, to the medium of photography in Europe?.

Goldberg beat three other finalists to clinch the award for his exhibition, Open See.

The project ? which combined still imagery with video – documented the migration of people from war torn countries such as Iraq, to make new lives in Europe.

The three other shortlisted photographers were Thomas Demand (Germany), Roe Ethridge (USA) and Elad Lassry (Israel).

They each received £3,000.
