It sounds like the start of a joke – what do you get when you cross a supermoon with a lunar eclipse? Answer: a super blood moon. Well, we never said it was funny.

Those who set their alarms for the extreme early hours this morning were rewarded with an exceedingly rare astronomical event – a large moon with a coppery reddish hue, popularly known as a ‘blood moon’.

Some thought it a sign of the end times, though so far we can cautiously say that it probably wasn’t, but dire threats of apocalypse weren’t enough to stop AP readers from setting the alarms and getting out with their cameras.
