The BBC News website is searching for ?compelling? digital images in its quest to find its Photographer of the Year 2005.
The contest ? open to amateurs and professionals – features the following categories: My family & friends (deadline 8 August); Fashion (22 August); Power (5 September); Work (19 September); Environment (3 October); and Spaces (17 October).
The winner will be given the chance to shoot a photographic story of their choice which will then be displayed on the BBC News website. The BBC has pledged to pay £400 towards the cost of the project.
Organisers say there will be an extra prize for the photographer whose images catch their eye.
Though the competition is open to all, the BBC expects most entries to come from photography enthusiasts.
Entries must be in digital format ? ideally JPEGs ? and should be sent to yourpics@bbc.co.uk
The BBC online picture desk will choose the eight best images from each category. These will be displayed on the BBC News website and visitors to the site will be asked to choose their favourite. The two most popular images will then go forward to a final vote on 1 November to decide the overall winner.
The rules state that entrants grant the BBC the right to publish the photographs in connection with the competition and any associated promotion. However, photographers will retain copyright in their images.
Last year?s winner was Veronica Carter whose entry is pictured above.
