Amateur photographers who have witnessed a breaking news story are urged to enter their pictures into the BT Citizen Photographer of the Year.

Aimed at members of the public, the BT Citizen Photographer of the Year contest is part of the UK Picture Editors’ Guild Awards and is designed to ?reflect the impact of citizen journalism on newspapers and websites?, say organisers.

Amateur Photographer magazine editor Damien Demolder will help judge the competition.

The BT Citizen Photographer of the Year will receive £500.

Entries must have been captured between 17 July 2010 and 16 July 2011. The closing date is 31 July 2011.

There are other award categories, open only to professional photographers, entries from which will be judged for the Guild’s overall Photographer of the Year title.

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony due to take place in central London in September, hosted by BBC News presenter Kate Silverton.
