Martin Parr, Steve McCurry and Mary McCartney were among big name photographers whose pictures raised £91,000 for a charity that plans to work with young people in Afghanistan.

More than 300 people bid for the images at the Photovoice auction which took place at Canary Wharf in London.

Photovoice aims to help disadvantaged and marginalised communities by running photography workshops and providing equipment.

Hosted by Reuters the Photovoice auction of Exceptional Photography included Steve McCurry’s ‘Boy in Mid-Flight, 2007’ which sold for £2,200.

While a print by PhotoVoice patron Sarah Moon bowed out for £3,000.

A spokesman for the charity said: ‘Photovoice is thrilled with the results and the event’s success has ensured that the charity can continue its planned programme of activity in 2010, its 10th anniversary.

‘Projects planned include participatory photography projects with young people in Afghanistan and the UK and manual scavengers in India.’
