The Guardian newspaper has today paid tribute to one of its most respected photographers, Ted West, who has died aged 78.

Ted joined the Guardian in 1970 after jobs as a messenger – and later darkroom assistant – on the London Evening Standard, and work as an agency photographer.

In an obituary published in today?s Guardian, photographer Martin Argles writes: ?He was a press photographer for more than 40 years, the last 26 of which were spent on the Guardian, a career that stretched from the days of plate cameras and glass negatives to the beginnings of digital photography.?

Ted, who was from south London, retired from the newspaper in 1996.
