The BBC has urged camera suppliers to check the authenticity of orders they receive after fake BBC documentation was used to steal cameras from a store in Dorset.
Robert White Photographic lost tens of thousands of pounds worth of cameras and lenses in the alleged fraud, which included four top-of-the-range professional D3x models worth £6,000 each.
Earlier this week we reported how the fraudsters duped the Poole-based store using a faxed purchase order, purportedly from the BBC.
Store bosses said the documents appeared genuine and were told that a taxi would be sent to collect the gear because it was needed urgently.
A BBC spokeswoman told Amateur Photographer (AP) that it could not comment on the specifics of the case because it is a ‘police matter’.
However she added: ‘Suppliers should check the authenticity of customers wherever they purport to be from.’
Meanwhile, police investigations are ongoing.
Dorset Police said it has passed the case file to the Metropolitan Police on the basis that a ‘major part of the offence took place in London’.
The Met had yet to comment at the time of writing.
