Organisers of a new underwater photography competition have urged entrants to ensure their submissions are ?genuine underwater photographs? and ?not from outside a fish tank?.
The British Splash-In Championship 2008 is organised by the British Society of Underwater Photographers (BSoUP) and The Wildlife Trusts.
Backed by Olympus, the print contest will result in an exhibition at the National Maritime Aquarium in Plymouth, Devon, opening on 21 June.
The competition consists of four categories: British & Irish; Overseas; Advanced British & Irish; and Advanced Overseas.
The advanced categories are aimed at photographers who are, for example, ?significantly involved? in commercial underwater photography.
The overall winner of British & Irish category, organised by The Wildlife Trusts, will receive a year?s membership of their local trust and a copy of the book The Unnatural History of the Sea.
The winning image will also be published in the trust?s magazine Natural World and on the organisation?s website. While copyright remains with the photographer, use of the image to promote the trust?s work will be discussed with the winning photographer before publication, according to a spokeswoman.
For its part, the BSoUP states that it ?reserves the right to publish winning images both in the Society magazine and on the website?. It adds: ?Winning images may also be used in future promotional material for the event royalty free but copyright remains with the photographer?.
Entries must be no larger than A4 size and the closing date is 21 May.
