A Reuters press photographer has been set free by authorities in Syria, ending six days of uncertainty over his fate.

Khaled al-Hariri had been detained as he arrived for work in Damascus last Monday, just days after other journalists were expelled from the country which has seen a series of anti-government protests.

Reuters editor-in-chief Stephen Adler spoke of his relief at the release of the Syrian photographer who has worked for the agency for 20 years.

?We had not heard from Khaled for six days and were increasingly concerned about his safety and wellbeing.

?Thankfully he has now safely returned to his family.?
