Press freedom body Reporters Without Borders has condemned the violence which broke out when security forces moved to clear camps set up by supporters of deposed president Mohammed Morsi.

In a statement released yesterday, Reporters Without Borders said: ‘Many Egyptian journalists, especially news photographers, were injured while covering the violent dispersal of the pro-Morsi demonstrations in Rabaa Al-Adawiya Square and Mostafa Mahmoud Square.’

The injured reportedly include Reuters photographer Asma Wadi.

She was hit in the leg by a shot fired from an AK-47 rifle, according to Reporters Without Borders.

Iman Hilal, a photographer for an Egyptian newspaper, was threatened with a knife and forced to hand over his camera’s memory card.

Photographer Ahmad Najjar is said to have sustained a gunshot wound to his arm and Mike Giglio, a journalist, says he was arrested alongside Egyptian freelance Mahmoud Abou Zeid and French photographer Louis Jammes.

‘Both were beaten after identifying themselves as journalists,’ Giglio wrote yesterday.

A French photojournalist known as ‘Mani’ says security forces kicked and beat him.
