Digital manipulation is back in the headlines with news that police stand accused of altering a photo of Jean Charles de Menezes for direct comparison with a picture of one of the 21/7 plotters, according to a report on BBC News online.

Menezes was shot dead at Stockwell Tube station on 22 July 2005 after wrongly being identified as one of the terrorists who struck London the day before. He had been mistaken for Hussain Osman.

Prosecutors reportedly told the Old Bailey that the image had been stretched or re-sized so the face ‘ceases to have its correct proportions’.

Police created the composite image to show the difficulties they had in distinguishing between the two men.
