A ?powerful? image of a red squirrel has today triumphed in the RSPCA Young Photographer Awards 2011.
Will Nicholls, aged 16, captured the image in the Kielder Forest, Northumberland.
Photographer Danny Green, one of the judges, described the winning image as an ‘intimate portrait of an elusive creature’.
He added: ‘This is all the more powerful because the red squirrel is not doing too great at the moment – there has been a massive decline and it is now a very rare species.’
Will was crowned winner at a ceremony held at the Tower of London this lunchtime.
Amateur Photographer features editor Gemma Padley was also on the judging panel, alongside wildlife filmmaker Simon King.
