The Royal Photographic Society (RPS) hopes to encourage more young people to apply for its Distinctions awards by opening up the programme to moving image makers.
?It is quite a change for the RPS. We are particularly encouraging people under 35 to have a go,? said Peter Hayes, a member of the Multimedia and Narrative Distinction panel.
?There are five billion mobile phones in use on the planet, and almost every one of them has a camera and/or video facility.?
RPS director general Michael Pritchard added: ?We now have iPads, iPhones, apps, mobile phones, 3D, Motion capture and thermal imaging and we have to recognise them.
?The tools to create images may have evolved but our distinctions assessments remain about recognising technical competence and creativity.?
The RPS invites submissions from anyone of any age and using ?any platform?.
There are two Distinction levels in the Multimedia and Narrative category: Licentiateship and Associateship.
Licentiate applicants do not have to be RPS members.
The RPS will hold a special ‘advisory day? at its headquarters in Bath on 29 February and hopes to attract anyone undertaking audiovisual and multimedia projects, including students.
The first assessment day for the new Distinction will take place in Bath on 4 April.
The RPS was founded in 1853.
