The first Sony digital SLR will adopt the worldwide brand name ?alpha? (a) and is expected to inherit the legacy of the Minolta Dynax A-type bayonet lens mount.
The alpha symbol a ? meaning ?beginning? and ?essential? – is the first letter of the Greek alphabet and has been chosen to reflect ?Sony?s enthusiasm for entering the DSLR market,? according to a statement issued by the company today.
Production of the new camera will start ?soon? and it will be the first in a ?new breed? of Sony digital SLRs, according to
Yutaka Nakagawa, president of Sony Corporation?s Digital Imaging Business Group.
Nakagawa said that the camera is due to receive its ?global launch? this summer and will be compatible with more than 16m Konica Minolta lenses.
The move follows Sony?s decision to take over the digital SLR operations of Konica Minolta which pulled out of the photography market earlier this year blaming the ?shrinking? demand for film (see AP 11 February 2006).
