A photographer who narrowly escaped being killed by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan has won the 2006 Canon Female Photojournalist Award.
French photographer Véronique de Viguerie – who studied photography in the UK ? almost lost her life when the suicide bomber struck a café in Kabul last year. The man sitting next to her was killed outright.
The 28-year-old won the Canon accolade for recent photographs documenting Communist militiawomen in Nepal – earning her an ?8,000 grant. She will use the cash to help fund an upcoming project on the People?s Liberation Army in Nepal.
De Viguerie ? who only became a freelance photographer two years ago – has had her worked published in numerous publications including Newsweek and The Times.
