Around 140,000 more digital SLRs will have been sold in the UK in 2006 – 63% more than 2005, according to estimates released to AP by the Photo Marketing Association.
A PMA spokesman told us: ?Total digital still camera units have reached a plateau ? 6.2m against 6m [in 2005]. The small increase is almost entirely due to the extra 140,000 DSLR units sold in 2006.?
Around 360,000 digital SLRs are expected to have been sold in 2006, compared with 220,000 the year before.
Total sales value of digital still cameras in 2006 are expected to hit £1 billion, £40,000 more than in 2005 and £380,000 more than three years ago.
However, the figures also reveal a halving of film camera sales from 600,000 in 2005 to around 300,000 units in 2006.
In value terms, film camera sales fell from £36m to £14m, according to PMA which says that its figures include those supplied by GfK Marketing Services.
There?s better news for memory cards where nearly a million more were sold in 2006 compared to the previous 12 months, raising total sales of £245m in 2006.
