The YMCA is calling for donations of photographic equipment as part of a project to help disadvantaged youngsters in Southampton, Hampshire.
Plans include turning one of the YMCA?s rooms into a darkroom and sending students on various photo assignments.
The scheme is being organised by Ed Francis, a former YMCA resident who told us: ?I am now repaying my debt by volunteering within to help others that were not given the chance. We are desperately in need of any old darkroom equipment, film, SLR cameras? anything.?
He added: ?My goal is to help young people who have come from a variety of disadvantaged backgrounds – notably homelessness – by giving them options and goals that will enable them to gain skills and qualifications to help them improve their situation.?
Ed said he has recently set up a photography club because he believes this is the ?best format for capturing a moment of these peoples lives, their trials and tribulations?.
He hopes the project will lead to an exhibition in November, following talks with a local gallery.
?With a little support from outside it is my ambition to see some of these kids expand their skills, going into further education or even becoming a pro one day,? Ed explained.
