Open to people under the age of 18, the contest is backed by Olympus which has pledged to give away camera gear as prizes.

Announcing this year’s competition, RSPCA chief photographer Andrew Forsyth said: ‘We were blown away by the images entered last year – the standard was just amazing considering the age of some of the photographers.

‘It doesn’t matter if the images are of birds, bees or budgies. This is a real opportunity to bring together a passion for photography with a love of animals and an interpretation of our relationship with them.’

Last year’s contest was won by 17-year-old Will Nicholls who won a three-day photo break with wildlife photographer Danny Green.

The deadline for entries is 10 September.
