The ‘Afghan Elder’ photo (above) was hailed as \u2018captivating’ by organisers, and stars among four pictures entered by Corporal Mike Jones.<\/p>\n

Jones, who is based at RAF Marham in Norfolk, said he took the image at Kandahar on New Year’s Day.<\/p>\n

\u2018At the open day the RAF provided a Tornado GR4 and the crew were busy talking to a lot of excited kids and local people.<\/p>\n

\u2018I saw the man sitting alone to one side by the hangar door, just watching things go on.<\/p>\n

\u2018The conditions were perfect. As the hangar door opened there was a flood of natural light falling on him.<\/p>\n

\u2018It was a very natural shot and a striking picture that I am proud of.’<\/p>\n

This year’s Amateur Military category – sponsored by Jessops – was won for the second year in a row<\/a> by senior aircraftman Tim Laurence.<\/p>\n

Laurence, who is also based at RAF Marham, submitted a shot entitled \u2018The Beast of Kandahar’ (pictured below).<\/p>\n

Praising the high standard of this year’s entries, Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Dalton, said: \u2018These dynamic images reflect the extensive breadth of Service life, the critical contribution that our personnel are making to global operations and the unique year of celebrations for her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, as well as the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games.’<\/p>\n
