Nigel Atherton gives a few pointers\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Better phone photos: Step 1 &#8211; See<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.phototechnique.com\/featured\/better-phone-photos\/attachment\/1-see-c-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1142\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1142\" title=\"better phone photos - monkey sheep\" src=\"http:\/\/www.phototechnique.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/1-see-c2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"taking better phone photos monkey sheep\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>A phone is never going to be the best choice for fine-art landscapes but it\u2019s perfect as a visual diary. It\u2019s great for capturing spontaneous moments \u2013 things you see as you go about your day that are funny, touching, or weird \u2013 things that before camera phones would probably have gone unrecorded.<\/p>\n<p>Keep your eyes open for those little details that tell a story, make a statement or ask a question. Many people also use their phone to take pictures that reflect how they\u2019re feeling \u2013 like a visual mood board.<\/p>\n<h2>Better phone photos: step 2 &#8211; Shoot<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1141\" title=\"better phone photos - 2 shoot\" src=\"http:\/\/www.phototechnique.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/2-shoot-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"taking better phone photographs\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/>Its easy to get camera shake when using your phone, so take a little extra care when shooting.<\/p>\n<p>Hold the handset firmly with both hands and press the shutter button gently. Some handsets have a physical button as well as an on-screen one, which is a better option.<\/p>\n<p>You can fine-tune the focus and exposure by touching the screen at the appropriate point, and you can make your image brighter or darker by touching darker or lighter areas in the scene.<\/p>\n<p>Some apps, such as Camera+ for the iPhone, enable you to separate the focus and exposure points so the area you use to set the exposure can be different to the one you want to focus on.<\/p>\n<h2>Better phone photos: step 3 &#8211; Process<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.phototechnique.com\/featured\/better-phone-photos\/attachment\/3-img_0292\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1143\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1143\" title=\"better phone photos - river boats\" src=\"http:\/\/www.phototechnique.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/3-IMG_0292-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"better phone photos - river boats\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>One advantages of smartphones is their ability to edit an image. As well as the basics, you can apply an infinite number of creative effects, many based on old photographic processes of the past.<\/p>\n<p>You can add sepia or split tones, textures and borders, selective focusing effects and much more.<\/p>\n<p>You can usually apply the effect after you\u2019ve taken your shot, so you don\u2019t miss the moment and you still have the original to go back to.<\/p>\n<p>Most of these apps cost less than \u00a31 and some are free, so experiment.<\/p>\n<p>The image above was taken using Instagram, while the main image on the left was done using Snapseed.<\/p>\n<h2>Better phone photos: Step 4 &#8211; Share<\/h2>\n\t\t<div id=&quot;attachment_1145&quot;  class=\"c-caption alignright\" style=\"max-width: 257px\">\n\t\t\t<a href=\"http:\/\/www.phototechnique.com\/uncategorized\/better-phone-photos\/attachment\/4_share-4\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1183\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1183 \" title=\"better phone photos - exporting the image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.phototechnique.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/4_share3-237x300.jpg\" alt=\"better phone photos sharing the image\" width=\"237\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>\t\t\t<p class=\"c-caption__text\">Most phones give you the option of sharing your pics via Twitter, Facebook ad Flickr. Photogene gives even more options<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n<p>The other big trump card offered by smartphones is their ability to share images with the world almost instantly.<\/p>\n<p>In most cases these days, this will be via social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter, as well as photo-sharing sites like Flickr and Photo Bucket.<\/p>\n<p>You can either download the dedicated app for your chosen website and select the photo you want to share through that, or in most cases upload to your chosen site directly from the photo app.<\/p>\n<p>Take a moment to think of a good caption that\u2019s pithy, witty or touching, as this can increase the impact of your image.<\/p>\n<p>Tagging your photos will place them on a map.<\/p>\n<p>And don\u2019t forget to back up your phone regularly to keep your pictures safe should you lose it.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The best camera is the one you have with you, which these days is probably on your phone.
