An image of an orangutan\u00a0crossing a river in Indonesia has won<\/span>\u00a0the grand prize in the National Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year contest 2017. <\/span><\/p>\n

Singaporean photographer\u00a0<\/em>Jayaprakash Joghee Bojan captured the image when he was\u00a0about five feet deep in water in the Sekoyner River in Tanjung Puting\u00a0National<\/span>\u00a0Park in Borneo, Indonesia, which is supposedly home to freshwater crocodiles.<\/span><\/p>\n

The photograph was selected\u00a0from over 11,000 entries, winning Bojan a $10,000 USD prize and publication of the image in an upcoming issue of\u00a0National<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Geographic<\/span>\u00a0magazine.<\/span><\/p>\n

He said, \u201cHonestly, sometimes you just go blind when things like this happen. You\u2019re so caught up. You really don\u2019t know what\u2019s happening. <\/span><\/p>\n

“You don\u2019t feel the pain, you don\u2019t feel the mosquito bites, you don\u2019t feel the cold, because your mind is completely lost in what\u2019s happening in front of you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Todd Kennedy of New South Wales, Australia won first place in the Aerials category with his photo of a rock pool in Sydney at high tide.<\/span><\/p>\n\t\t

Other winners included Jim Obester of Vancouver, Wash., who won first place in the Underwater category for a photo of an anemone and Karim Iliya of Haiku, Hawaii, who won first place in the Landscapes category for a photo from Hawai\u2019i Volcanoes\u00a0National<\/span>\u00a0Park.<\/span><\/p>\n
