Every year, it funds the production of an investigative photo reportage. The winning laureate, who is selected by an international jury, receives a \u20ac50,000 grant in order to carry out a six-month report with the support of the Fondation Carmignac.<\/p>\n<p>In return, the foundation produces a travelling exhibition and a book, with four of the images from the report bequeathed to the permanent collection of the Fondation Carmignac. Photo: Tommaso Protti for Fondation Carmignac<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n<p>From January to July 2019, the recipient was Italian photojournalist Tommaso Protti, who, accompanied by the British journalist Sam Cowie, travelled thousands of miles across the Brazilian Amazon to create the work featured in the book Amaz\u00f4nia.<\/p>\n<p>Keen to portray life in modern-day Brazilian Amazon, where social and humanitarian crises overlap with ongoing destruction of the rainforest, the duo journeyed from the eastern region of Maranh\u00e3o to the western region of Rond\u00f4nia, through the states of Par\u00e1 and Amazonas.<\/p>\n\t\t<div id=&quot;attachment_137841&quot;  class=\"c-caption aligncenter\" style=\"max-width: 1220px\">\n\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-137841 size-full\" src=\"\/export\/55_amazon_392298681_663370482.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" \/>\t\t\t<p class=\"c-caption__text\">Pau d\u2019Arco, Par\u00e1. Photo: Tommaso Protti for Fondation Carmignac<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n<p><strong>Raising awareness<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He continues, \u2018Scientists say the forest is reaching a point of no return because of deforestation, fuelled by illegal logging, and because of land grabbing, agricultural expansion, state and private sector-led development and resource extraction projects. It\u2019s important to raise awareness of the situation and to question it.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Environmental issues are, without question, one of the biggest and most important stories of our generation.
