The competition is now in its 12<sup>th\u00a0<\/sup>year and has attracted over 5,200 entries, taken by amateurs and professionals from almost 70\u00a0countries \u2013 a new record.<\/p>\n<p>The shortlist is as diverse and engrossing as ever and includes a full moon illuminating the Shard in London, an aurora over\u00a0Stokksnes headland on the Icelandic coast and a remarkable scene of a total solar eclipse<\/p>\n<p>The winners of the competition\u2019s nine categories and two special prizes will be announced on Thursday 10 September 2020. The winning images will then be displayed in an exhibition at the National Maritime Museum, alongside a selection of exceptional shortlisted images. Winners and shortlisted entries will also be published in the competition\u2019s official book, available in September from bookstores and online, and to pre-order from the Royal Museums Greenwich online shop.<\/p>\n<p>See the full shortlist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rmg.co.uk\/whats-on\/astronomy-photographer-year\/galleries\/2020\/shortlist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>, but in the meantime, here are some of our favourite images from the selection. We wish all shortlisted candidates the very best of luck.<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-138697 size-large\" src=\"\/export\/A-7051-Green-Lady-\u00a9-Nicholas-Roemmelt-min-630x392.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"630\" height=\"392\" \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>The Green Lady, Nicholas Roemmelt<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough I have had the chance to gaze at and photograph the Northern Lights many times, I have never seen that mysterious \u2018green lady\u2019 before. It wasn\u2019t until our journey to Norway last March that she unexpectedly appeared with her magical green clothes.\u201d<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-138698 size-large\" src=\"\/export\/G-34363-1_The-Many-Jets-and-Shells-of-Centaurus-A-\u00a9-Connor-Matherne-min-500x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"400\" \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>The Many Jets and Shells of Centaurus by Connor Matherne<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a small smudge of red on the left side of the main jet, known as the C jet, and it wasn&#8217;t discovered until 2017 by a team of scientists. To my knowledge, this is one of the first image of this jet ever taken by an amateur!\u201d<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-138703 size-large\" src=\"\/export\/II-32497-15_Jupiter-Rising-\u00a9-Stacey-Downton-630x323.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"630\" height=\"323\" \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Jupiter Rising, by Stacey Downton<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">&#8220;The \u2018Great Red Spot\u2019 is in my opinion the defining feature in this dataset. I\u2019ve tried imaging it with my own telescope and as yet, it has eluded me, usually due to the bad weather and equipment woes.
