Although a lot of camera and lens makers are increasingly diverting their R&D budgets towards expanding their mirrorless camera ranges, DSLR models continue to play an important role in manufacturers’ line-ups, targeting a wide range of consumers, from absolute beginners to professionals.<\/p>\n
Pentax, for example, is resolutely sticking<\/a> with DSLR technology, whilst Canon and Nikon both still have a wide range of DSLR camera options.<\/p>\n DSLRs remain a cost-effective solution for many photographers, and of course, the technology is tried and tested over several decades.<\/p>\n There is a huge choice of reasonably priced lenses and although the Electronic Viewfinders (EVFs) on mirrorless cameras have got a lot better, some photographers still prefer the optical viewfinders of DSLRs.<\/p>\n The battery life of DSLRs is often better than that of mirrorless models and, of course, not everyone wants to shoulder the cost of changing over to an entirely new type of camera system – particularly in these economically uncertain times.<\/p>\n There are two main sensor sizes to be aware of when choosing a DSLR are APS-C and Full-Frame<\/a>.<\/p>\n APS-C sensors are smaller – they’re sometimes referred to as ‘crop sensors’, and give a 1.5x (Nikon), or 1.6x (Canon) view when compared to full-frame.<\/p>\n What this crop factor means is the lens you have on the camera has a longer effective focal length.
