Photo Fringe, the biennial Sussex-based festival championing photographers and lens-based artists, continues to amaze (and sometimes shock) attendees with its refreshing take on contemporary photography.\u00a0Now in its ninth incarnation, the festival has embraced \u2018the new normal\u2019 by arranging exhibitions and presentations both online and in-venue, with pop-up events and outdoor installations joining those in more traditional spaces across the South Coast.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Festival organisers describe TAKE\/MAKE as a \u2018call to action\u2019, with many events designed to encourage artists (and their audiences) to use photography as a tool for instigating positive change. As such, themes range from protests and climate change, to family dramas and the intimacy of conversations held over a cup of tea.<\/p>\n\n

Naturally, the impact of Covid-19 is well documented here, but each artist has adopted a highly individual and creative approach to the topic. Despite the ever-changing rules and regulations, Photo Fringe has welcomed more exhibitors than ever before this year \u2013 over 180 in total. Each artist has embraced uncertainty and experimentation to produce a festival like no other.<\/p>\n

\n<\/strong>Disarmingly beautiful cyanotypes exploring the visible, psychological and ecological impact of marine plastic debris. Scholz even used seawater to develop the prints. Visit the exhibition here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\t\t

\n<\/strong>The transition fromprimary to secondary school can be challenging but with so many rites of passage cancelled this year the class of 2020 have felt it more than most. \nNorth\/South by the Landing Collective<\/a>
\n<\/strong>Artists Bethan Clarke and Epha J. Roe explore the connection between human culture and nature. The techniques they use often incorporate physical elements of the land such as flowers, plants and soil. Visit the exhibition here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\t\t

\nEdmundo by Denis Serrano<\/a>

\n<\/strong>Produced by Sarah French, a researcher at the University of Sussex and Hastings Museum and Art Gallery, this exhibition sheds light on the life of Annie Brassey, a Victorian travel writer and collector. See the exhibition here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\t\t
