It\u2019s a sad day for Olympus fans, with confirmation of the long-suspected news that upcoming cameras will no longer feature the famous name emblazoned on the front. Instead, future Micro Four Thirds models from OM Digital Solutions will go under a new \u2018OM System\u2019 label<\/strong>. This brand will also be used for the firm\u2019s other products, including Tough-series compact cameras, audio recorders, and binoculars<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\t\t

New models will no longer feature the famous ‘Olympus’ name, which has been used on cameras since 1936<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n

OM Digital Solutions is the firm that was formed when Olympus Corporation divested its camera business and sold it to venture capitalists Japan Industrial Partners, Inc. Fans of its cameras will be relieved to hear that OMDS still retains the rights to use the Zuiko<\/strong> name on its lenses.<\/p>\n

New Micro Four Thirds camera coming<\/h3>\n

The firm has also recommitted its future to the Micro Four Thirds format, saying that it\u2019s in the process of developing a new camera. Its statement is almost entirely devoid of substantial detail, instead employing buzzwords such as \u2018cutting-edge technologies\u2019 and \u2018the use of computational photographic technology\u2019, that are sure to be analysed ad nauseam until the camera finally appears.<\/p>\n\t\t

It seems very likely that the upcoming camera will use a new stacked CMOS sensor from Sony<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n

In this respect, Sony Semiconductor\u2019s recent reveal of a 20MP stacked CMOS Four Thirds sensor, the IMX472<\/a>, capable of 120fps readout and said to be \u2018designed for use in consumer use digital still camera\u2019, can only add fuel to the fire.<\/p>\n

Stacked CMOS technology underpins the remarkable performance of such cameras as the Sony Alpha 1<\/a> and Canon EOS R3<\/a>. It enables such features as ultra-fast continuous shooting with vast buffer capacities and low-distortion electronic shutters. It could also bring some improvements to high-ISO noise performance.<\/p>\n
