You know where you are when you’re shooting with a Canon DSLR camera. Guest writer John Bridges shares his thoughts.\u00a0 <\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

You know where you are with a Canon, whether you’re using a Canon EOS 60D, 70D, 80D, or 90D<\/a>, they all look the same, and when it’s time to upgrade you just buy the next one in the list, such as the 70D or the 80D, you don’t even need to think about it or look into what’s new and different with the new cameras, you just buy the new one when it comes out. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In fact, Canon has made it even easier with the Canon EOS 5D, you just buy the next EOS 5D, the Mark II, if you have the original one, the Mark III when\u00a0you\u2019ve\u00a0had enough of the Mark II, and the Mark IV, when\u00a0you\u2019ve\u00a0had enough of the III.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Above all else,\u00a0you need to ensure that the D is at the end of the number, if the D is at the beginning of the number, then\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0entering Nikon territory!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It doesn’t matter whether you’re using a new Canon and it’s the latest and greatest or an older Canon, they all look and feel the same, all the buttons and controls are in the same place, and have got a reassuring build quality. The grip and shutter release buttons all look the same and feel the same. They also all deliver the same photos. Sure, if you’re technical, you could look into all the specific details, but I’d rather be taking photos.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cover up the number on the camera, and you could even pretend to have the latest version, and impress your friends. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\t\t

Same as it ever was, the 50mm 1.8 lens…<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Similarly with the lens choice you have – it\u00a0doesn’t\u00a0matter you can choose\u00a0the Canon\u00a050mm\u00a0f\/1.8 and then\u00a0Canon\u00a0and will come out with a new 50mm\u00a0f\/1.8\u00a0II\u00a0and then later another 50mm\u00a0f\/1.8\u00a0STM lens, so that when I want to make a change, I can just buy the newest version. Not that\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0anything wrong with the 50mm lens I already have.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\t\t

It\u00a0doesn’t\u00a0matter\u00a0which one you buy,\u00a0they’re\u00a0all the same. You know where you are with\u00a0the Canon 50mm\u00a0f\/1.8\u00a0lens, you\u00a0don’t\u00a0have to worry about innovation here, you\u00a0don’t\u00a0have to worry about some new unique or weird lens coming along in the DSLR world… You can leave that to the Mirrorless cameras.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\t\t

Zoom lenses…<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

I\u00a0think\u00a0the same can be said can be said\u00a0with the zoom lenses,\u00a0you\u00a0don’t\u00a0have to worry about anything weird coming along like with mirrorless cameras.\u00a0You know you\u00a0can go out and\u00a0get a 24-70mm\u00a0(so popular\u00a0are these,\u00a0Canon\u00a0have\u00a0a total of four\u00a024-70mm lenses just for fun, albeit\u00a0two have IS, and one is an f\/4, rather than f\/2.8). Want to be different, like to go against the flow?\u00a0Have a look at the\u00a0Tamron,\u00a0Sigma,\u00a0or\u00a0Tokina\u00a024-70mm lenses.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s\u00a0as though\u00a0they all know the secret, the 24-70mm is the only lens\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0ever\u00a0need\u00a0(that and the 50mm 1.8, obviously). In fact, you can leave it constantly on your camera, and never change lenses,\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0find the 50mm setting in the middle of 24 and 70mm anyway. Keep things simple, stupid.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But if you do want another lens…<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

There\u2019s also the 70-200mm lens, the other must have lens when it comes to DSLRs (after the 24-70mm, and 50mm lens). In fact, there are multiple 70-200mm lens. Why try something new, when you can release a 70-200mm lens over and over again. Canon being so keen on this lens, that they give you the choice of 6 different EF 70-200mm lenses currently listed on their website!*<\/span><\/p>\n

You know where you are with a 70-200mm lens.\u00a0But be aware, there are other lenses, some have the audacity to offer a slightly different zoom range,\u00a0there is\u00a0even a 70-210mm lens out there, but as\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0been saying, stick to what you know, and you know what\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0getting with a 70-200mm lens.\u00a0A 70-210mm lens is obviously inferior to the 70-200mm lens, simply for the fact that\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0different.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Because everyone else uses Canon, you can grab a bargain!<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Canon\u2019s EF lenses and cameras have been around for years, there\u2019s plenty of them, and you can find an absolute bargain buying second hand. Want a 50mm f1.8 lens? You can get a new one for \u00a3129 for the fancy STM version, but get one of the others, and you\u2019re looking at paying just \u00a366 second-hand. One of the many reasons why I only buy Canon DSLRs.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If it\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0broken, why fix it?<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Image Stabilisation<\/strong> – I\u00a0don’t\u00a0need\u00a0Image Stabilisation or\u00a0IS, or in-body image stabilisation. Everyone knows the rule of thumb, you just use a shutter speed the same or faster than you lens\u2019 focal length, so 1\/50s on a 50mm lens, or faster, and\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0sorted. Plus, by using faster shutter speeds, I\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0need to worry about motion blur or movement of the subject, like I would have to if I were using a slower shutter speed and image stabilisation.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Eye\/face\u00a0detection\u00a0AF<\/strong> – I\u00a0don’t\u00a0need eye\u00a0or face detection auto-focus.\u00a0When I get a portrait shot in focus using auto\u00a0focus\u00a0I want to know that it was due to my own\u00a0hard work\u00a0taking multiple shots just to make sure I got the eye(s)\u00a0in focus, and it was my technique and skills, not some fancy intelligent time saving AF system that decided for me that\u00a0the\u00a0eyes should be in focus.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Don’t get me started on video…<\/strong><\/p>\n
