A major exhibition of photographs by Paul Trevor documents a dramatic struggle for justice. Following the racist murder of Altab Ali in May 1978, east London\u2019s young Bengali community took to the streets in protest. Four Corners\u2019 new exhibition, Brick Lane 1978: The Turning Point<\/em>, brings together seventy of Paul Trevor\u2019s images alongside accounts of pioneering activists, to produce a powerful narrative of the time.<\/p>\n
The show marks the culmination of a major heritage project led by Four Corners and Swadhinata Trust with a dedicated group of volunteers, and who have interviewed many people involved in these momentous events. The exhibition pays tribute to a generation whose actions changed the course of civil rights in the UK.<\/p>\n

Urban Photographers Club founder and exhibition organiser Jovis Leigh Howieson conceived the idea for this project when the UK entered its second lockdown in October 2020, with the aim of completing it over 12 months. The images within this exhibition has have all been made from Urban Photographers Club members in response to the 52 Assignments: Street Photography book<\/a> by Brian Lloyd Duckett<\/a> (published by Ammonite Press<\/a>) and have been curated by him for this showing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Opening March 2022, Fashioning Masculinities: The Art of Menswear will be the first major V&A exhibition to celebrate the power, artistry and diversity of masculine attire and appearance. The show will trace how menswear has been fashioned and refashioned over the centuries, and how designers, tailors and artists \u2013 and their clients and sitters \u2013 have constructed and performed masculinity, and unpicked it at the seams.<\/p>\n
Fashioning Masculinities will present around 100 looks and 100 artworks, displayed thematically across three galleries. Contemporary looks by legendary designers and rising stars will be displayed alongside historical treasures from the V&A\u2019s collections and landmark loans: classical sculptures, Renaissance paintings, iconic photographs, and powerful film and performance.<\/p>\n
Photography on display will include images by David Hockney, Lionel Wendt, Zanele Muholi and Isaac Julien.<\/p>\n

Surrealism is not a style \u2013 but a state of mind. It aims to subvert reality. To find the uncanny in the everyday. To tap into our unconscious desires and bring dreams to life. And for many artists around the world, it has been a way to challenge authority and imagine a new world.<\/p>\n
Previous stories of surrealism have focused on Paris in the 1920s. Based on extensive research, this exhibition will reach across the world and over 50 years. It will show how artists around the world have been inspired and united by surrealism \u2013 from centres as diverse as Buenos Aires, Cairo, Lisbon, Mexico City, Prague, Seoul, and Tokyo.<\/p>\n
The exhibition will feature over 150 works, many of which have not been shown before in the UK. Including photographs by Cecilia Porras and Enrique Grau, alongside the likes of Lee Miller and Man Ray.<\/p>\n

Vivian Maier (1926-2009) has only recently been revealed as one of the most significant photographers of the 20th century. From carefree children and glamorous housewives to the homeless and destitute, Maier\u2019s portraits capture the highs and lows of everyday life. Street scenes with shop fronts, arcades and aerial shots use shadows and reflections to capture the improvised moments that make up a community. Smouldering furniture, abandoned toys, tangles of electric cables all set the scene as families, workers and commuters go about their daily business.<\/p>\n

The Hepworth Wakefield will present the first major survey of British photographer Hannah Starkey, tracing the development of her work across two decades. Throughout her career, Starkey\u2019s meticulously choreographed photographs have determinedly engaged with how women are represented in contemporary culture, an issue which is now centre stage.<\/p>\n
On display will be photographs from Starkey\u2019s graduation show in 1997 that immediately brought her widespread acclaim, through to a newly commissioned body of work that will be created with young women in Wakefield in 2022.<\/p>\n
