Northern Lights specialist G\u00f6ran Strand talks us through this low-light challenge and his forthcoming Zoom Photo Tours workshop<\/h2>\n

When it comes to low light and night photography, few subjects are more compelling \u2013 and popular \u2013 than the Northern Lights. As the Royal Meteorological Society<\/strong> explains, this hugely photogenic phenomenon is caused by activity on the surface of the sun. Solar storms spew out huge clouds of electrically charged particles, which can travel millions of miles.<\/p>\n

Some of these particles are captured in the Earth\u2019s magnetic field, accelerating down towards the north and south poles into the atmosphere. This is why aurora activity is concentrated at the Earth\u2019s poles. So what we are actually seeing are atoms and molecules in our atmosphere colliding with particles from the sun. The aurora\u2019s characteristic wavy patterns and \u2018curtains\u2019 of light are caused by the lines of force in the Earth\u2019s magnetic field.<\/p>\n\t\t

\n\t\t\t\"Northern<\/a>\t\t\t

Anyway, you don\u2019t need to be a meteorologist or physicist to know that the northern lights are like catnip to photographers. Swedish photographer G\u00f6ran Strand dedicates his life to shooting them, so we caught up to get his tips \u2013 don\u2019t forget to sign up for his forthcoming tour in March<\/a>, organised by Zoom Photo Tours<\/strong><\/a> and AP.<\/p>\n

Cheaper and more accessible<\/h3>\n

\u2018My interest in photography goes back to the 1990s when I started doing nature and landscape photography,\u2019 Goran explains by way of background. \u2018Then I started working part time as a professional photographer back in 2003 and I\u2019ve been working as a full-time photographer since 2012.\u2019<\/p>\n

As G\u00f6ran explains, he\u2019s been interested in astronomy and watching the stars for as long as he can remember, so it was more or less inevitable that he would point his camera skywards at some point. \u2018It all started in the mid-1990s when I got my first telescope. After some time I realised that there\u2019s so much beauty and interesting things about space and different light phenomena, so I decided to start showing my photos more publicly and doing lectures about what you can see and photograph.\u2019<\/p>\n\t\t

G\u00f6ran started doing workshops about a decade ago. \u2018Back then it wasn\u2019t as popular as it is now. I think the interest for northern lights really kicked off with social media and that the camera gear that was needed got cheaper and more accessible to more people.\u2019<\/p>\n

We wondered how G\u00f6ran went about making his images of the northern lights original and eye-catching \u2013 after all, many photographers all over the world now have them on their bucket list. \u2018I\u2019ve been photographing the northern lights for almost 20 years now so for me the challenge is to come up with new ideas,\u2019 he explains. \u2018I often think \u201cwhat can I do next time that I haven\u2019t done before?\u201d I think my imagination and curiosity helps me with my creativity. I always strive to improve my creativity and ideas for new compositions to keep making interesting photos that stand out in some way.\u2019<\/p>\n

Common pitfalls to avoid when photographing the Northern Lights<\/h3>\n

As a seasoned workshop leader, G\u00f6ran has a lot of experience in helping photographers to capture this magnificent spectacle for the first time. He\u2019s got some useful insights into the mistakes that people tend to make.<\/p>\n\t\t

\n\t\t\t\"light<\/a>\t\t\t

\u2018Light trails can add drama to your photos and lead the viewer into the image centre. A five-shot panorama\u2019 Nikon D850, 14-24mm lens, 20 secs at f\/4, ISO 6400<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n

\u2018People often forget to include the surroundings, and I notice this a lot. They forget to include the northern lights in their context. Let\u2019s say you photograph the northern lights back home and then go to, let\u2019s say, Iceland. You need to show Iceland at the same time. Also people often tend to underexpose the photos a bit too much in the beginning, and that in turn exacerbates the problem of not seeing the surroundings.\u2019<\/p>\n

G\u00f6ran is now a Nikon Z ambassador and reckons the smaller form factor of these still very powerful mirrorless cameras is a big help when it comes to shooting the northern lights. \u2018Both the camera bodies and lenses are smaller which makes it easier to move around and be more creative. The LCD screen also makes composition much easier when working in awkward positions. The new Nikon Z9 also has a new feature called Starlight mode which really makes it much easier to compose a photo in total darkness. This mode helps the camera to focus right down to\u00a0-8.5 EV, while illuminated buttons help to change settings in the dark.\u2019<\/p>\n\t\t

You\u2019ll still need a tripod<\/h3>\n

When it comes to camera settings, G\u00f6ran is first of all adamant that a tripod is still needed, despite the many breakthroughs in in-camera and lens image stabilisation when it comes to low-light photography. \u2018As for settings, it all depends on the surrounding conditions and the intensity and activity of the northern lights, but usually a good start is something like ISO 1600 and a 5-10 second exposure.<\/p>\n

For composition, the most important thing is to be playful with your camera. Try to get up close to something in the foreground \u2013 usually a low angle gives a more dramatic feeling to a photo. For the northern lights themselves, look for interesting formations.\u2019 G\u00f6ran tries to keep editing to the minimum. \u2018Some photos are just a 10-15 minute edit, but big panoramas can take a couple of days before I\u2019m satisfied with them. I use Adobe Photoshop with Adobe Camera Raw for my editing. For panoramas, I use PTGui and for astrophotography, I use PixInsight.\u2019<\/p>\n

\n

G\u00f6ran\u2019s gear<\/h3>\n

At the moment G\u00f6ran\u2019s main mirrorless cameras are the Nikon Z 9<\/a> and Z 6II<\/a>, for the reasons outlined in the main feature. \u2018The two DSLRs I\u2019m using the most are the Nikon D850<\/a> and the Nikon D810A<\/a>. The latter is a special astrophotography camera that Nikon released back in 2014. It\u2019s more sensitive to red light which is very good when taking photos of nebulas and so on.<\/p>\n

His most used lenses are the Nikkor 14-24mm f\/2.8<\/a>, 24-70mm f\/2.8<\/a> and 70-200mm f\/2.8<\/a>, both the Z-versions and the older lenses with F-mount. \u2018For big panoramas I often use my Nikon 8-15mm f\/3.5-4.5 E ED<\/a> Fisheye Zoom Lens. I also use a Nikon 600mm f\/4<\/a> lens quite a lot for lunar photography.\u2019<\/p>\n

\n

G\u00f6ran Strand<\/h3>\n\"Photographer<\/a>\n

G\u00f6ran Strand is a freelance photographer based out of \u00d6stersund, Sweden, who specialises in astrophotography. Many of his photos have been published by NASA\u2019s Astronomy Picture Of the Day, SpaceWeather.com, National Geographic and more. Shoot the Northern Lights with G\u00f6ran<\/h3>\n

As mentioned, you can learn directly from G\u00f6ran himself on his forthcoming\u00a0Northern Lights in Abisko<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0tour from 10-13 March 2022<\/strong>. It takes place in Abisko National Park in Sweden, which many experts believe is the best place in the world for northern lights photography.<\/p>\n

\u2018Besides general camera settings and photo editing I will explain how the northern lights work and how to predict them. I will also teach how to make panoramas and time-lapses.
