The Photography Ethics Centre has launched a campaign to encourage photographers, editors, curators, organisations, and other professionals in the photography industry to write and publish Statements of Ethics.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Belfast-based social enterprise, which was founded in 2017 and works globally, has launched the campaign to ask photographers to reflect on their practice, identify their own ethical approach and share it with the world.<\/p>\n

The Photography Ethics Centre claimed, ‘Amid tectonic shifts across the industry, ethics provides crucial foundations on which photographers can ground their work.’<\/em><\/p>\n

Declaration of principles<\/h3>\n

A Statement of Ethics is a declaration of a photographer\u2019s ethical principles and a description of how they enact those principles in their photography practice.<\/p>\n

By publishing a Statement of Ethics to their websites, photo professionals can encourage transparency, foster accountability, and enhance ethical awareness across the industry.<\/p>\n

It will also be the final component in the Photography Ethics Centre\u2019s newly released certification programme<\/strong>, which shows an individual has actively engaged with ethics education.<\/p>\n\t\t

Reflecting in advance<\/h3>\n

Savannah Dodd, founder of the Photography\u00a0Ethics Centre<\/strong>, said, \u2018We often only have\u00a0conversations about ethics when\u00a0something goes wrong. If we start thinking about and\u00a0talking about ethics more\u00a0proactively, when things are going right, we can embed ethics\u00a0into our\u00a0photographic practice. By reflecting on ethics in advance,\u00a0photographers will be better equipped to field ethical\u00a0questions and to make\u00a0ethical decisions when they occur. By publicly articulating an\u00a0ethical stance,\u00a0we can each contribute toward cultivating a culture of ethics within the\u00a0photography industry.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n

The Photography Ethics Centre has created an\u00a0online pledge\u00a0where photographers can\u00a0commit to writing a Statement of Ethics and to\u00a0publishing it through their online\u00a0platforms.<\/p>\n

AP: How did you get involved in the photography business?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Savannah Dodd:<\/strong> My background is in anthropology, but I have been a practicing photographer since my teens. I still maintain my own photography practice – see Savannah Dodd Photography<\/a> – alongside my work with the Photography Ethics Centre and my PhD research in anthropology.<\/p>\n

AP: Why did you originally set up the Photography Ethics Centre?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Savannah Dodd:<\/strong> I founded the Photography Ethics Centre after spending some months volunteering at photography festivals and galleries when I was living in Southeast Asia in 2016.<\/p>\n

At\u00a0these events, I had discussions with other photographers about the\u00a0ethics of their practice – for example, about asking for consent and the responsibility of photographers in\u00a0challenging\u00a0or dangerous situations. But I quickly realised that I was raising ethical\u00a0questions\u00a0that many people had never thought about.<\/p>\n

I realised that my education\u00a0in\u00a0anthropology has prepared me with an awareness of ethics that has guided my\u00a0own photography practice, but that\u00a0this awareness is not universal.<\/p>\n

I realised that\u00a0there is a gap in ethical understanding among photographers, and that this is a\u00a0gap\u00a0that I can fill. That is why, one year later in 2017, I founded the Photography Ethics Centre.<\/p>\n

Ethics matters to photography because photographs are powerful.\u00a0Photographs\u00a0shape how we see the world, and when we take and share photographs, we are shaping how others see the world. In order to meet this enormous responsibility, we need our work in photography to be underpinned by ethics.<\/p>\n\t\t

AP: Why is it important for photographers to set out their ethics?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Savannah Dodd:<\/strong> We make ethical decisions every time we make and share a photograph, whether or not we are aware of it.<\/p>\n

Ethics shape our decisions around what we photograph, how we photograph it, how we edit that photograph, where we publish a photograph, and how we caption it.<\/p>\n

By taking time to consider and articulate our own ethical stance, we can cultivate awareness about\u00a0of the ethical dimensions to the decisions we\u00a0make, and we can make those decisions more deliberately and with greater care.<\/p>\n

Photographers who do not consider ethics are at risk of\u00a0unknowingly breaching\u00a0national or international laws and ethical norms about\u00a0privacy, confidentiality,\u00a0copyright, consent, and child protection, among\u00a0others.<\/p>\n

These breeches can be costly \u2013\u00a0in terms of\u00a0time, money, and reputation. Unfortunately, we often only have conversations about ethics when something goes\u00a0wrong, yet\u00a0so many of the negative stories we see in the\u00a0photography industry could have\u00a0been prevented if photographers had proactively\u00a0embedded ethics in their\u00a0workflow.<\/p>\n

Moreover, by\u00a0publishing a Statement of Ethics\u00a0to their websites, photography professionals can encourage\u00a0transparency, foster\u00a0accountability, and enhance ethical awareness across the industry.<\/p>\n

Of course, ethics for a wedding photographer will look a little\u00a0different than ethics for a documentary\u00a0photographer, but we can all embed ethics into our photographic practice.<\/p>\n

A great example to look at for understanding ethics in product photography is Waleed Shah, who works to break stereotypes with his work. This ethical aim shapes his decisions about the images he produces and the clients he works with.<\/p>\n

AP: What do you mean by ethics?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Savannah Dodd:<\/strong> There are a couple important points to clarify what we mean by ethics. We cast the net of ethics very broadly. Ethics isn\u2019t just about the things that are happening when you are behind the lens.<\/p>\n

Ethics, of course, includes things like consent and representation, but also environmental sustainability, personal safety, and respect for colleagues.<\/p>\n

We do not offer ethical guidelines or rules. Instead, we approach ethics as subjective, contextual, and fluid.<\/p>\n

This means that ethics are different for different people, because ethics are influenced by our life experiences and our moral frameworks, that ethical decisions are shaped by the contexts we are working in, and that ethics change as we grow and learn as people, as we work across different photographic genres, etc.<\/p>\n

About the Photography Ethics Centre<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Photography Ethics Centre is a\u00a0social enterprise organisation dedicated to\u00a0raising awareness about the ethics\u00a0of taking and sharing visual media.<\/p>\n

Operating\u00a0online and in person and serving\u00a0a global audience, it offers a wide range of\u00a0educational content through a\u00a0variety of access points, including podcasts, articles,\u00a0online courses, and\u00a0live events.<\/p>\n

The organisation works with the photography\u00a0industry and other\u00a0sectors that deal heavily in visual media, including international\u00a0development,\u00a0academia, and journalism.<\/p>\n

The core belief of the organisation is that\u00a0photography ethics has the power to change the world, and its key goal is to\u00a0embed a culture of ethics in photography.<\/p>\n
