{"id":165878,"date":"2022-05-22T10:00:01","date_gmt":"2022-05-22T09:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/?p=165878"},"modified":"2022-05-18T13:13:21","modified_gmt":"2022-05-18T12:13:21","slug":"dont-let-anyone-tell-you-photography-isnt-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/latest\/opinion\/dont-let-anyone-tell-you-photography-isnt-art\/","title":{"rendered":"Don\u2019t let anyone tell you photography isn\u2019t art\u2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Steve Fairclough reveals why photography must be regarded as art\u2026<\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Clang!<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll warn you in advance\u2026 this opinion piece may include regular instances of name-dropping, but I promise it\u2019s all done with good reason.<\/p>\n<p>One of the greatest joys of covering all aspects of photography is when I get the opportunity to interview some of the world\u2019s best exponents of the art (remember that word) of photography. I\u2019ve had the privilege of making a film with <a href=\"https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/technique\/interviews\/don-mccullin-life-black-white-79500\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Don McCullin<\/a> (Google <em>Seeking the Light<\/em> if you feel so inclined) and have interviewed the likes of Steve McCurry, Albert Watson, <a href=\"https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/technique\/interviews\/star-man-terry-oneill-99279\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Terry O&#8217;Neill<\/a>, Tom Stoddart, <a href=\"https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/technique\/interviews\/harry-benson-persons-of-interest-114045\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harry Benson<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/technique\/interviews\/fighting-for-rights-steve-schapiro-interview-107491\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Steve Schapiro<\/a>, to name but a few.<\/p>\n<p>The reason for mentioning them is, as with every photographer I\u2019ve ever interviewed over the past 30-plus years, I\u2019ll always ask who or what first inspired them to pick up a camera. Around 50% will name a family member or mention names such as Don McCullin, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Richard Avedon, W. Eugene Smith, Bill Brandt, Diane Arbus and Mary Ellen Mark\u2026 but <strong>that leaves the remaining 50% or so who aren\u2019t primarily inspired by photography, and this is where art comes in<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Regular <em>AP<\/em> readers may recall a 2021 \u2018lockdown feature\u2019 we did with Roff Smith, who shot a series of stunning portraits of him cycling around the English county of Sussex&#8230; but the images were more akin to the paintings of Edward Hopper than documentary or sports photographs. Indeed, Smith happily cited Hopper, J.M.W. Turner and Claude Monet as his main inspirations.<\/p>\n\t\t<div id=&quot;attachment_166263&quot;  class=\"c-caption aligncenter\" style=\"max-width: 1020px\">\n\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"166263\" src=\"https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Nighthawk-by-Roff-Smith-was-inspired-by-the-paintings-of-Edward-Hopper.jpg\" alt=\"Nighthawk by Roff Smith was inspired by the paintings of Edward Hopper\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/>\t\t\t<p class=\"c-caption__text\">Nighthawk by Roff Smith was inspired by the paintings of Edward Hopper<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n<p>Such an artistic eye is reflected in the work and choices of the likes of US photographer Stephen Wilkes (arguably most famous for his stunning<em> Day to Night<\/em> composites), who named his inspirations as Brueghel the Elder and Hieronymous Bosch.<\/p>\n<p>US celebrity portrait photographer Vijat Mohindra\u2019s favourite inspiration is the surreal artist Salvador Dali; UK portrait photographer Andy Gotts named Caravaggio and Rembrandt; Albert Watson attended the Royal College of Art to study film and television and Liam Wong\u2019s neon-filled night-time Tokyo cityscapes clearly take their inspiration from the classic 1982 movie <em>Blade Runner<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The point of all this is that <strong>it\u2019s crystal clear that a huge swathe of great photographers take their creative leads from art and moving media, not necessarily photography<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Add other variables into the mix \u2013 shooting in colour (or black and white), conveying emotion, composition, angles, technical adroitness, technique, working with light, understanding physics \u2013 and it\u2019s obvious <strong>a whole host of artistic and technical decisions have to be made even before the shutter button is pushed down<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\t\t<div id=&quot;attachment_166264&quot;  class=\"c-caption aligncenter\" style=\"max-width: 1020px\">\n\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"166264\" src=\"https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Sheltering-from-a-heavy-mortar-bombardment-67-year-old-Antonia-Arapovic-hugs-her-neighbours-terrified-child-in-the-darkness-of-a-underground-cellar-in-Sarajevo-1992.jpg\" alt=\"Sheltering from a heavy mortar bombardment, 67-year-old Antonia Arapovic, hugs her neighbour's terrified child in the darkness of a underground cellar in Sarajevo, 1992 - a prime example of a photojournalist's image displaying an artistic eye. \u00a9 Tom Stoddart\/Getty Images\" width=\"1000\" height=\"681\" \/>\t\t\t<p class=\"c-caption__text\">Sheltering from a heavy mortar bombardment, 67-year-old Antonia Arapovic, hugs her neighbour&#8217;s terrified child in the darkness of an underground cellar in Sarajevo, 1992 &#8211; a prime example of a photojournalist&#8217;s image displaying an artistic eye. \u00a9 Tom Stoddart\/Getty Images<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n<p>If we literally look at a dictionary definition of art it says, <em>\u2018the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<p>OK, well, there\u2019s no mention of photography there, <strong>BUT don\u2019t tell me photographs don\u2019t require skill and imagination and convey beauty or emotional power<\/strong> \u2013 in fact, that\u2019s the very essence of what\u2019s goes into creating the vast majority of photographic images.<\/p>\n<p>Clang!<\/p>\n<p>Sorry, more name-dropping to drive home my point\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Many moons ago, when David Bailey was penning a regular column for <em>AP<\/em>, we gave Bailey a panoramic disposable camera to take on one of his family holidays. Whether you love or loathe his work, <strong>Bailey came back with superb images that demonstrated an artistic eye that few could match<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The late, great Terry O\u2019Neill once told he didn\u2019t really like cameras (bar his old Canon 7 rangefinder with a 50mm f\/0.95 lens) \u2013 he said he\u2019d much prefer it if someone could invent an imaging device he could put in his eye, so he could blink and take a picture of what he imagined in his head. <strong>You see, we\u2019re back to creative imagination \u2013 the essence of art.
