NEWS UPDATE: TRIBUTES TO PHOTOGRAPHERS KILLED IN LIBYA ATTACKS<\/a><\/p>\nAlejandro, 34, fought off more than 100,000 entries to scoop the $25,000 cash prize and the coveted L?Iris D-Or.<\/p>\n
His winning photos depict the lives of a community of islanders who live on the Panama River Delta.<\/p>\n
?These carefully directed pictures tell solid truths- about toil and communality and marginal economic survival ? in a splendidly allusive way,? said Francis Hodgson, chair of the judging panel.<\/p>\n
Alejandro, who spent two years living with the islanders for his ?High Tide? project, said: ?Using photography I have been able to present another version of the Panama River Delta and its community that has been photographically ignored throughout the years.?<\/p>\n
The Buenos Aires-born photographer began his career as a photographer on a local newspaper aged 18.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, amateur photographer Chan Kwok Hung from Hong Kong triumphed in the Open category.<\/p>\n
The 37-year-old jewellery maker landed a $5,000 cash prize along with a Sony DSLR for a dramatic image called ?Buffalo Race?, captured on a trip to Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Renowned US photographer Bruce Davidson, 77, was presented with the Outstanding Contribution to Photography Award in a ceremony held at the Odeon, Leicester Square in London.<\/p>\n
Louis Boulet from France won the Student Focus award.<\/p>\n
