{"id":171065,"date":"2022-07-28T12:47:23","date_gmt":"2022-07-28T11:47:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/?p=171065"},"modified":"2022-07-28T12:50:52","modified_gmt":"2022-07-28T11:50:52","slug":"first-career-retrospective-of-ian-beesley-to-open-in-bradford","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/latest\/photo-news\/first-career-retrospective-of-ian-beesley-to-open-in-bradford\/","title":{"rendered":"First career retrospective of Ian Beesley to open in Saltaire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>From 20 August 2022 the Salts Mill near Bradford will show the first ever career retrospective of internationally acclaimed, Bradford-born social documentary photographer Ian Beesley.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Edited from Beesley\u2019s archive of 60,000 images, the exhibition will include previously unseen pictures as well as some of his best-known works created during a career spanning over 40 years.<\/p>\n<p>When Beesley (born 1954) was expelled from school he found work in his local sewage works.<\/p>\n<p>His colleagues urged him to find a passion and engage in education.<\/p>\n<p>With their help, he found photography and headed first for Bradford Art College, then Bournemouth &amp; Poole College of Art.<\/p>\n<p>On graduating he was awarded the Kodak scholarship for social documentation.<\/p>\n<p>Thus began a lifelong study of the North\u2019s cultural and industrial heritage, with people at the heart of almost every picture.<\/p>\n\t\t<div id=&quot;attachment_171067&quot;  class=\"c-caption aligncenter\" style=\"max-width: 1020px\">\n\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"171067\" src=\"https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Babe-one-of-the-last-Yorkshire-miners-2010.jpg\" alt=\"Babe, one of the last Yorkshire miners, 2010. He asked me to take a formal portrait with my plate camera after he had finished his shift and was still covered in pit dirt. He wanted the photograph for his grandchildren and their children. 'We are the last of the miners and soon we will all be gone, I want my grandkids, their kids and their grandkids to know I was a miner and this is what I looked like.' \u00a9 Ian Beesley\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1333\" \/>\t\t\t<p class=\"c-caption__text\">Babe, one of the last Yorkshire miners, 2010. Ian Beesley explained, &#8216;I spent years photographing Hayroyd\u2019s Pit in Clayton West, Yorkshire. Babe was a face worker. He asked me to take a formal portrait with my plate camera after he had finished his shift and was still covered in pit dirt. He wanted the photograph for his grandchildren and their children. Babe said, &#8216;We are the last of the miners and soon we will all be gone, I want my grandkids, their kids and their grandkids to know I was a miner and this is what I looked like.&#8217; \u00a9 Ian Beesley<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n<h3>Capturing an industrial society<\/h3>\n<p>Beesley\u2019s early output was created walking the streets, capturing an industrial society that\u2019s now extinct: kids larking about outside, ladies talking between tightly terraced streets, grafters going full pelt within vast Victorian factories.<\/p>\n<p>Beesley soon found himself documenting the brutal closure of core heavy industries such as mining, iron and steel production.<\/p>\n<p>The nobility of labour and the horror of one\u2019s skills being forcibly rendered obsolete figure largely in these works.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years Beesley\u2019s work has encompassed physical and mental health through his involvement with important medical research projects including the Bradford Institute for Health Research\u2019s Born in Bradford project and the University of Exeter\u2019s IDEAL and ENLIVEN projects researching the effects of dementia.<\/p>\n<p>The detailed notes Beesley makes around each shoot make for fascinating reading.<\/p>\n<p>Some of these notes will be displayed alongside the photographs, beneath the iron girders of Salts Mill\u2019s UNESCO World Heritage Site, which has a quarter-mile long roof-space.<\/p>\n\t\t<div id=&quot;attachment_171068&quot;  class=\"c-caption aligncenter\" style=\"max-width: 1020px\">\n\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"171068\" src=\"https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Fish-n-chip-van-Otley-Road-Bradford.jpg\" alt=\"Fish 'n' chip van, Otley Road, Bradford.
