First time DSLR users are the target for a new 12.4-million-pixel digital SLR from Pentax called the K-x, featuring ‘HD’ video and a top equivalent ISO expandable up to 12,800.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Though not designed to replace any other camera, Pentax UK has confirmed that the K-m – announced earlier this year – has been discontinued.<\/p>\n

Featuring the same chassis as the K-m, the camera appears to take its name from the ‘Pentax KX’, a 35mm film SLR camera launched by the firm way back in 1975.<\/p>\n

In a nod to the days of film, Pentax has installed a mode designed to simulate the effect of ‘cross-processing’, to create ‘eye-catching’ images. This function includes three preset options, plus the ability to set these randomly, according to Pentax UK.<\/p>\n

Billed as an ‘entry class’ camera, the K-x DSLR houses a new CMOS imaging sensor and the same Prime II imaging processor as its higher end sibling, the 14.6MP K-7. This aims to boost AF speed and accuracy in low light.<\/p>\n

The Pentax K-x will go on sale at the end of October, priced around \u00a3600, in a choice of black, white, blue and red. It will be available as a kit with an 18-55mm lens. We understand that the K-x will not go on sale body only.<\/p>\n

The Live View-enabled model includes Face Detection to automatically detect up to 16 faces. The camera uses Contrast AF, and Phase Detection AF.<\/p>\n

Like the K7, the K-x includes digital filter effects such as Star Burst and Fish Eye.<\/p>\n

Image stabilisation comes in the form of a sensor-shift mechanism.<\/p>\n

Photographers can shoot at a rate of up to 4.7 frames per second for up to 17 JPEG files and five raw format frames, says Pentax.<\/p>\n

Also on board is a ‘dust-removal’ mechanism.<\/p>\n

The ‘Pentax-only’ developed model weighs 515g and sports a 2.7in LCD screen carrying a resolution of 230,000 pixels.<\/p>\n

The Pentamirror-equipped camera features 16-segment metering and an 11-point SAFOX VIII AF system (featuring nine cross-type sensors). The viewfinder is claimed to offer a field of view of 96%.<\/p>\n

The K-x incorporates a built-in High Dynamic Range (HDR) function designed to create one composite image – with ‘extra-wide dynamic range’ – from three different exposures.<\/p>\n

Boasting a top shutter speed of 1\/6000sec the K-x aims to deliver 1280×720 pixel (24 frames per second) videos.<\/p>\n

Though there is a built-in microphone, there is no option to add an external microphone.<\/p>\n

The K-x will be launched alongside a new lens. The Pentax-DA L 55-300mm f\/4-5.8 ED is described as a ‘lightweight super-telephoto’ that delivers the 35mm viewing angle equivalent of a 84.5-460mm lens.<\/p>\n

The zoom will be available as part of a twin-lens kit (which includes the 18-55mm lens), priced \u00a3749.99.<\/p>\n
