The traditional still image makes a bigger impression on the viewer than rolling TV news and the internet, claim organisers of The Press Photographer’s Year 2009.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A spokesman for contest, now in its fourth year, said: ‘The competition’s aim is to demonstrate once again that even in an age of rolling television news, internet and satellite communication, the traditional still image, makes the keenest, fastest impression on the public consciousness and is the most effective way to show the world as it really is.’<\/p>\n

A photo of an orphaned elephant by UK-based freelance photographer Rosie Hallam beat nearly 8,000 images to claim the Photograph of the Year title.<\/p>\n

Other winners included David Bebber who won first place in the News category and Jeff Overs, a photographer for the BBC, who scooped the Features section.<\/p>\n

The contest, backed by Canon, is designed to showcase ‘outstanding press photography taken for and used by the UK media’.<\/p>\n

Around 150 of the best entries have gone on show until 1 August in a free exhibition at the National Theatre on London’s South Bank.<\/p>\n

More than 300 photographers took part in the contest which attracted submissions from 20 countries worldwide.<\/p>\n

The winning photographers are due to receive their awards at the National Theatre next Monday evening.<\/p>\n
