<\/span>Page One: Man accused of attacking photographer in remote African village<\/p>\n

Photographs of a man accused of the attempted murder of a photographer in a remote African village, have been released.<\/p>\n

Kypros Kyprianou, who grew up in England, claims he was attacked by men wielding machetes<\/a> while travelling around Mozambique taking photographs for a new book. <\/p>\n

The photographer today released images of one of the suspects. He said that he took the pictures following an arrest made by local police in Mueda. <\/p>\n

Kyprianou, 45, captured the photos on a Samsung GX-20 digital SLR camera that he won last year in a competition organised by UK magazine Amateur Photographer<\/em>.<\/p>\n

As we reported on Tuesday, Kyprianou – who is travelling alone and living in his Land Rover – said men tried to kill him as he took a break in the vehicle on Sunday night. <\/p>\n

He suffered a number of cuts to his body during the incident but said he was not badly hurt.<\/p>\n

In a frantic call to the newsdesk of Amateur Photographer<\/em>, the photographer said on Tuesday: ‘Bandits attacked me and hit me with their machetes. I have cuts all over me.’ <\/p>\n

‘It was attempted murder,’ claimed the former businessman who now lives in Greece.<\/p>\n

Speaking today, he said that one of the attackers hacked at him through a smashed window while holding on to a roof rack as he tried to escape the assault.<\/p>\n

‘I drove the Land Rover into bushes and shrubs at high speed and finally braked sharply, throwing the attacker into the air,’ he added.<\/p>\n

Last year Kyprianou visited the London offices of Amateur Photographer<\/em> to show staff his photographs before embarking on a project to photograph ‘remote areas of Africa’. <\/p>\n

In 2008 he won camera equipment in the magazine’s Amateur Photographer of the Year (APOY) competition.<\/p>\n

At the time of writing Amateur Photographer<\/em> had not been able to independently verify details of the incident.<\/p>\n

The magazine has alerted the Greek Embassy in Mozambique.<\/p>\n

The photographer first contacted the magazine from a local radio station on Tuesday. <\/p>\n
