UK photographer Paul Graham last night won the \u00a330,000 Deutsche B\u00f6rse Photography Prize. <\/p>\n

Judges chose Graham for his publication, ‘a shimmer of possibility’ which is made up of 12 photo stories depicting life in contemporary America.<\/p>\n

Graham beat Tod Papageorge and Taryn Simon, both from the United States and Emily Jacir, a photographer based in Kuwait. The shortlisted photographers each win \u00a33,000.<\/p>\n

Brett Rogers, director of The Photographers’ Gallery which is hosting an exhibition of the best entries, said that Graham’s images ‘push the photographic medium in many ways’ through ‘acute observation of bare life’.<\/p>\n

The annual award is designed to reward a photographer who has made the most significant contribution to the medium in Europe between 1 October 2007-30 September 2008.<\/p>\n

The exhibition runs at The Photographers’ Gallery until 12 April. For details visit www.photonet.org.uk<\/p>\n
