There appears to be no sign of a recession at Nikon where UK camera gear sales have soared 23% in the past year.<\/p>\n

Imaging products sales revenue rose 23% in the eleven months to the end of February, compared to the same period the year before, said Nikon UK’s general manager Simon Coleman in an interview at PMA.<\/p>\n

However, he said a sales surge does not necessarily mean a corresponding increase in profits.<\/p>\n

He described sales of the D90 and D700 digital SLRs as ‘outstanding’.<\/p>\n

Coleman said it is possible that consumers have snapped up camera gear to beat the recent price rises<\/a>, or have decided to buy kit because the expected financial return on savings has fallen during the recession.<\/p>\n

While he believes strong brand names such as Nikon traditionally ‘do well in a recession’, he is not complacent about the future which he predicts will be ‘challenging’ as the economic downturn continues.<\/p>\n

He confirmed that Nikon plans to launch new DSLRs later this year, though he would not be drawn on whether the first model will be a professional-level camera or a lower-end model.<\/p>\n

‘There is some good technology in the product line-up for this year,’ he told us.<\/p>\n
