A black-and-white image depicting the impact of the US housing crisis has won the World Press Photo award for American photographer Anthony Suau. It beat more than 96,000 other entries.<\/p>\n

Suau scoops a 10,000 Euro cash prize and a Canon EOS 5D Mark II digital SLR camera.<\/p>\n

The winning image shows an armed officer at the home of people who were evicted following a mortgage foreclosure in Cleveland, Ohio, last year.<\/p>\n

Officers were there to make sure that the house was clear of weapons and the residents had moved out.<\/p>\n

‘The strength of the picture is in its opposites,’ said judging panel chair MaryAnne Golon. ‘It’s a double entendre. It looks like a classic conflict photograph, but it is simply the eviction of people from a house following foreclosure.<\/p>\n

‘Now war, in its classic sense, is coming into people’s houses because they can’t pay their mortgages.’<\/p>\n

Last year, British photographer Tim Hetherington<\/a> landed the title with his image of a US soldier in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n
