An amateur photographer hoping to photograph a council-run Christmas event in Edinburgh was left in shock when an official stopped him for an apparent breach of ?data protection laws?.<\/p>\n

David Elder, 72, had been planning to take pictures of fairground rides and panoramic views at the city?s Winter Wonderland event, according to the Edinburgh Evening News<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But, after setting up his tripod near Scott Monument, an official told him he would be in breach of data protection laws.<\/p>\n

Speaking to the Edinburgh Evening News<\/a> David, a retired lawyer, said: ?He [the steward] made it very clear that I was not allowed to take pictures, only one of my family.<\/p>\n

?I asked him about people who take pictures on mobile phones. He said they would be told the same.<\/p>\n

?I had to dismantle everything and head for my bus home.?<\/p>\n

David, a member of Haddington Camera Club, has now warned fellow photo enthusiasts to steer clear of the event.<\/p>\n

The event is organised by a private company on behalf of the council.<\/p>\n

Amateur Photographer<\/em> magazine is investigating the matter and will update this report as we learn more.<\/p>\n

At the time of writing, organisers had yet to provide an explanation for the steward’s decision.<\/p>\n

But a spokeswoman said she was aware of the incident.<\/p>\n
