The National Media Museum (NMM) is a step closer to opening a base in London as it enters talks with the government to win approval for the move.<\/p>\n

Last year we revealed that the West Yorkshire-based museum plans to open a base at London’s Science Museum<\/a>, as an addition to its home in Bradford.<\/p>\n

Considered to be Britain’s flagship photography institution<\/a>, the NMM holds an historic collection of photographs, including the oldest surviving negative created by British photography inventor William Henry Fox Talbot.<\/p>\n

A NMM spokeswoman told Amateur Photographer<\/em> last night: ?We are currently in discussions with the government about gaining approval for our plan to establish a presence in London for the National Media Museum.?<\/p>\n

She added: ?A lot of work has been done on the project and we hope to be making an announcement this autumn.?<\/p>\n

The NMM declined to comment further ?until we?ve had approval?.<\/p>\n

We understand that as part of the conditions of the move, the Science Museum will insist that the NMM does not purely display photographs on its walls, but it must also showcase equipment.<\/p>\n

In 2006 the NMM changed its name from the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television.<\/p>\n
