Nikon is recalling some of its EN-EL3-type rechargeable batteries ? used in cameras including the D100, D70 and D50 – after it discovered a potential fault causing ?overheating?.<\/p>\n
The company has issued a worldwide ?voluntary recall notice? – warning that on ?rare occasions some? may become defective, resulting in overheating during re-charging?.<\/p>\n
Though Nikon has not received reports of any injuries it has confirmed that there have so far been five incidents of faulty batteries worldwide, including two in Europe.<\/p>\n
In the statement ? which appears on Nikon?s UK-based website ? the company reveals: ?The overheating has caused damage to adjacent material during the recharging process and further use is not advised.?<\/p>\n
The EN-EL3 came supplied in the kit with the D100, D70 and D50 cameras. It is also sold as separate accessory for these cameras and can be used in the D70s digital SLR.<\/p>\n
The batches ?possibly? hit by the problem were made between May and September 2004 details of which can be seen at http:\/\/www.nikon.co.uk\/press_room\/releases\/show.aspx?rid=193<\/p>\n
The batch number is printed on the surface of the battery and the company has pledged to replace the batteries affected.<\/p>\n
