{"id":34727,"date":"2014-09-19T15:56:55","date_gmt":"2014-09-19T14:56:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/amateurphotographer.co.uk\/?p=34727"},"modified":"2015-04-27T14:30:37","modified_gmt":"2015-04-27T13:30:37","slug":"photo-industry-must-appeal-younger-generation-says-pentax-chief","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/latest\/photo-news\/photo-industry-must-appeal-younger-generation-says-pentax-chief\/","title":{"rendered":"Photo industry must appeal to younger generation, says Pentax chief"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u2018The desire to express ourselves creatively and to share our own vision of the world is much more widespread with young people today than with previous generations, and photography is a major part of that,\u2019 explained Martin, during an interview at the Photokina trade show in Cologne.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Photography is more popular than it has ever been, thanks partly to the easy availability of the technology to make that possible. Everyone is taking pictures on their phones, yet not enough of them are taking that step into a camera shop to buy a proper camera. We need to do more to tempt them by offering them cameras that not only provide that step-up in image quality but are more cool and stylish to look at, and easier to use.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Martin was standing beneath the centerpiece of the Ricoh stand at Photokina, a huge display of 120 multi-coloured Pentax K-50 DSLRs suspended under a wall of running water, designed to demonstrate both the weather resistance of the camera as well as the unequalled range of colour combinations that it comes in.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/wall2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-34752\" alt=\"wall2\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/wall2.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/09\/wall2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/09\/wall2.jpg?resize=300,217 300w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/09\/wall2.jpg?resize=554,400 554w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/09\/wall2.jpg?resize=562,406 562w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><em>Image: The colourful Pentax stand at Photokina. Photo by Nigel Atherton<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u2018The theme of our stand this year is colour,\u2019 he added, in case it wasn\u2019t clear. \u2018People don\u2019t have to settle for black; they can create a camera customised to their own tastes.<\/p>\n<p>The main attraction on the Ricoh stand, however, was not the K-50 but the radically styled new Pentax K-S1 DSLR, a camera that demonstrates perfectly how the company is trying to woo a younger buyer. With its row of flashing LED lights built into the handgrip (green for stills shooting, red for video), its diminutive footprint and stylish backlit mode dial on the back it looks like nothing yet seen on a DSLR, and that\u2019s the point.<\/p>\n<a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/1K-S1White-600px-for-web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"1K-S1White 600px for web\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/1K-S1White-600px-for-web.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"496\" \/><\/a>\n<p><em>Image: The Pentax K-S1, sporting a row of futuristic LEDs, was announced at the end of August<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u2018The K-S1 looks quite futuristic,&#8217; says Martin, proudly. \u2018It probably won\u2019t appeal to the traditional AP reader but it might to their kids and grandchildren, who are probably taking more pictures than they are.\u2019 Although you can buy the K-S1 in black if you want to, as well as 11 other colours (including denim, tweed and sunset) it\u2019s the white version (pictured above) that has attracted the most attention so far, and which Martin expects to be the best seller.<\/p>\n\t\t<div id=&quot;attachment_34911&quot;  class=\"c-caption alignnone\" style=\"max-width: 383px\">\n\t\t\t<a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/jonathan-martin-small.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34911\" alt=\"Jonathan Martin \" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/jonathan-martin-small.jpg\" width=\"363\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/09\/jonathan-martin-small.jpg 363w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/09\/jonathan-martin-small.jpg?resize=300,413 300w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/09\/jonathan-martin-small.jpg?resize=290,400 290w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 363px) 100vw, 363px\" \/><\/a>\t\t\t<p class=\"c-caption__text\">Jonathan Martin<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n<p>But he is also at pains to point out that behind the colourful and stylish exteriors, Pentax also offers a higher specification for the money than its rivals.
