The two side trees in leaf seemed to create a good frame<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3771 size-full\" title=\"Kevin Day\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Kevin-Day.jpg\" alt=\"Landscape photographer Kevin Day\" width=\"152\" height=\"169\" \/>With so many demands on our time these days it can sometimes be difficult to find the time and the impetus to go out and take photographs. One of the best ways to find motivation is to take on a project, and for Slough-based designer and landscape photographer Kevin Day that project was his local beauty spot, Slough\u2019s Langley Park and, more specifically, a particularly gnarled tree that inhabits the park.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I often get up at five or six in the morning and go to the park, which is a ten-minute walk away,\u2019 he says. \u2018It\u2019s a very small park, but I can wander round for an hour or two. It\u2019s the light that interests me, and the way it affects the landscape. It\u2019s constantly changing, at different times of the day, different times of year.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Kevin\u2019s tree is a classic example of how you can return to the same subject again and again and get a different picture every time. But for Kevin Day the tree represents more than that. It\u2019s a symbol of his photographic renaissance.<\/p>\n\t\t<div id=&quot;attachment_3772&quot;  class=\"c-caption alignright\" style=\"max-width: 292px\">\n\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3772 size-full\" title=\"Kevin Day Mist\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Kevin-Day-Mist.jpg\" alt=\"Kevin Day Mist\" width=\"272\" height=\"363\" \/>\t\t\t<p class=\"c-caption__text\">I exposed for the mist on the far bank and used fill-in flash for the foreground that was almost in shadow. I added a slight pink tint to the water in Photoshop<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n<p>\u2018I did photography at college as part of my graphic design course, but as soon as the kids came along I did what most people do and put it to one side, through lack of time, and just took snaps of the kids and holidays.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Then about 18 months ago, with the kids grown up, Kevin Day booked a holiday to the Far East, which was the catalyst he needed to reacquaint himself with serious photography. Of course, in Kevin\u2019s absence, cameras had gone digital.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I bought a Fujifilm Finepix S7000. It was my first decent camera for many years and I found it totally liberating. It\u2019s a remarkable camera for what it cost, very impressive; its only drawback is the noise levels in low light, which is a bit of a problem because I do a lot of my photography at dawn.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Day joined the photo-sharing website Flickr, which turned out to be his biggest inspiration. \u2018Some of my pictures have been seen by three or four thousand people,\u2019 he enthuses, \u2018and the feedback I\u2019ve received from others has been great. I\u2019ve learned so much too \u2013 people have been very generous with their knowledge and advice, and the comments I\u2019ve received have inspired me to go out and take more pictures, and to improve on what I\u2019ve done.<\/p>\n<p>I certainly wouldn\u2019t have pushed myself so much if the pictures were simply for my own enjoyment.\u2019<\/p>\n\t\t<div id=&quot;attachment_3773&quot;  class=\"c-caption alignnone\" style=\"max-width: 420px\">\n\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3773 size-full\" title=\"Kevin Day Shaddow Tree\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Kevin-Day-Shaddow-Tree.jpg\" alt=\"Kevin Day Shaddow Tree\" width=\"400\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2012\/12\/Kevin-Day-Shaddow-Tree.jpg 400w, https:\/\/other.kelsey.host\/amateurphotographer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2012\/12\/Kevin-Day-Shaddow-Tree.jpg?resize=300,400 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>\t\t\t<p class=\"c-caption__text\">A walk around to the \u2018other side\u2019 of the lake gets me closer to the tree. I took two exposures, one for the sky and one for the grass, and then blended in Photoshop<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n<p>Kevin\u2019s tree project evolved from comments and suggestions that his fellow \u2018Flickrites\u2019 posted about his earliest efforts. \u2018I found people would say, \u201cI\u2019d have done it like this\u201d, or \u201cHave you tried that?\u201d\u2019 Kevin would then go off and give the tree another go. Soon he had enough pictures of the tree to group into an album.<\/p>\n<p>Not all Kevin\u2019s work is done in-camera. As a designer Kevin Day spends a lot of time using Photoshop on his Mac, and is something of an expert. But as well as making levels, curves and sharpening adjustments Kevin spends a lot of time using layer blend modes to maximise the dynamic range in his images. By taking three or four shots, on a tripod, at identical exposures, and then combining them into a single image, Kevin is able to capture shadow and highlight detail that would otherwise be impossible.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018What I do isn\u2019t HDR photography, which you can do at the press of a button in Photoshop CS2; it\u2019s more complex.
